The Power of Play: Encouraging Creativity and Confidence in Young Children.

May 2024 | Megha Patil

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s common for parents to treat their children like miniature adults, emphasizing structured activities and the latest toys. However, it's crucial to allow kids to embrace their own identities and the joys of simple, imaginative play. The power of play lies in its ability to foster creativity, confidence, and essential life skills.

I grew up in India, amidst the hustle and bustle of city life in Mumbai. Despite the city's chaos, my neighborhood was a quaint and peaceful area. I had the most wonderful friends, and in the 90s, without gadgets, our playtime revolved around simple things like sticks and stones. One of my fondest memories is playing lagori, a game I absolutely loved as a kid.

Lagori is one of my favorite traditional games. To play, we start by stacking nine flat stones or blocks on top of each other. We then split into two teams. The aim is to hit the pile with a ball and knock it over. Once the pile is down, my team’s goal is to rebuild the stack before the other team can hit us with the ball. It’s a thrilling mix of strategy and agility that really brings us together, fostering teamwork and creating a strong sense of camaraderie.

Instead of constantly purchasing modern toys, parents can introduce their children to the magic of old-school games that require minimal equipment but offer endless fun. Here are three easy, timeless game ideas to get started:

Hide and Seek:  This classic game never goes out of style. It encourages physical activity, problem-solving, and social interaction. Kids love the thrill of finding the perfect hiding spot and the excitement of being discovered. It’s a fantastic way to engage their minds and bodies, all while having a blast.

Hopscotch:  A piece of chalk and some outdoor space are all you need. Draw a hopscotch grid and let your kids hop their way to fun. This game improves balance, coordination, and counting skills, and it provides a great opportunity for kids to play together and develop social bonds. Plus, it gets them outside and moving, which is always a plus.

Make-Believe Play:

Encourage your children to use their imagination. They can become chefs, astronauts, or their favorite storybook characters. This type of play nurtures creativity, empathy, and language skills. Make-believe play allows kids to explore different roles and scenarios, helping them understand the world around them and express their emotions in a healthy way.

Focusing on simple, imaginative play helps children develop critical skills and boosts their confidence. These activities remind us that play doesn't need to be complicated or expensive to be effective. Old-school games provide valuable lessons and foster a sense of independence and self-assurance in children.

By incorporating these timeless games into daily routines, parents can offer their children a break from structured activities and screen time. Encourage your kids to explore their creativity and enjoy the simple pleasures of play. The benefits of these games extend beyond just having fun; they help build a foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth.

So, the next time you're considering a new toy or activity, think back to the simpler games of your childhood. Introduce these to your children and watch as they discover the joy and power of play. It’s a beautiful way to help them grow, learn, and shine in their unique ways.

Let’s aim for our little kids to Sparkle, Twirl and Rule the World through Happy Play.
